요절 : "여호와의 나무가 우택에 흡족함이여 곧 그의 심으신 레바논 백향목이로다"(시104:16)

우택(수액)이 없으면 나무는 무성할 수 없거나 살 수조차 없습니다. 활력(생명력)은 그리스도인에게 필수적(본질적)입니다. 생명(성령하나님에 의하여 우리 안에 부어진 생명의 원리)이 있어야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 우리는 여호와의 나무가 될 수 없습니다. 단지 그리스도인이란 이름은 죽은 것에 지나지 않습니다. 우리는 하나님의 생명의 영으로 충만되어야 합니다. 이 생명은 신비입니다. 중생은 사람 안으로 들어간 성령의 역사에 의하여 사람의 새 생명이 만들어 지는 것입니다.(즉 성령에 의하여 사람의 중생이 이루어집니다.)

성도 안에 있는 이 하나님의 생명(새 생명)은 그후엔 그리스도의 살과 피를 먹고 삽니다. 이 생명은 이처럼 하나님의 양식(예수 그리스도의 피와 살)에 의하여 유지됩니다.(역자주1) 그러나 그것이 어디에서 왔으며 그것이 어디로 가는지는 누가 우리에게 설명할 수 있을까요?(즉 누구도 알지 못합니다) 수액(우택, sap)은 얼마나 큰 비밀을 간직하고 있는지요! 뿌리들은 양분을 찾아 땅속으로 들어갑니다.

그러나 우리는 그것들이 여러 가지 가스(gas, 기체)들을 흡수하고, 또 땅의 무기물(the mineral)을 식물(植物)로 변형시키는 과정을 볼 수 없습니다. 이 일은 어두운 땅속에서 이루어집니다. 우리의 뿌리는 예수 그리스도입니다. 그리고 우리의 생명은 그리스도안에 감추어져 있습니다. 이것은 여호와의 비밀입니다. 그리스도 안에 있는 하나님의 생명은 항상 에너지로 충만해 있습니다. 성도가 받을 은혜들이 모두 항상 가동(활동)하는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 그의 생명은 우리 안에서 쉬지 않고 고동치고 있습니다.(즉 살아 있습니다.)

성도는 하나님을 위하여 항상 역사(일)하는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 그의 마음은 항상 주님을 먹고 삽니다. 수액(sap)이 나무의 잎들과 실과를 맺음으로서 그 자신을 나타내듯이, 참으로 건강한 그리스도인도 만찬가지로 그래야 합니다. 즉 그리스도인이 받은 은혜도 외부적으로 그의 생활과 대화에서 나타나야 하는 것입니다. 그대가 어떤 그리스도인과 이야기를 한다면, 그는 예수님에 관한 얘기를 하지 않을 수 없을 것입니다. 또 그대가 그의 행동들을 주목한다면, 그대는 그가 예수님과 함께 하고 있다는 사실을 곧 알 수 있을 것입니다. 그는 그 자신 안에 너무 많은 수액을 갖고 있기 때문에 그 수액은 그 그리스도인의 행동과 대화를 활기 차게 할 것입니다.(즉 활기로 넘치게 할 것입니다.)

"The trees of the Lord are full of sap" (Psalm 104: 16).

Without sap the tree cannot flourish or even exist. Vitality is essential to a Christian. There must be life--a vital principle infused into us by God the Holy Spirit--or we cannot be trees of the Lord. The mere name of being a Christian is but a dead thing. We must be filled with the Spirit of divine life. This life is mysterious. Regeneration is wrought by the Holy Spirit entering into man and becoming man's life. This divine life in a believer afterward feeds on the flesh and blood of Christ and is thus sustained by divine food. But where it comes from and where it goes, who can explain to us? What a secret thing the sap is! The roots go searching through the soil, but we cannot see them suck out the various gases or transform the mineral into the vegetable. This work is done down in the dark. Our root is Christ Jesus, and our life is hid in Him. This is the secret of the Lord. In the Christian, the divine life is always full of energy. The believer's graces are not all in constant motion, but his life never ceases to palpitate within. He is not always working for God, but his heart is always living on Him. As the sap manifests itself in producing the foliage and fruit of the tree, so it must be with a truly healthy Christian. His grace is externally manifested in his walk and conversation. If you talk with him, he cannot help speaking about Jesus. If you notice his actions, you will see that he has been with Jesus. He has so much sap within that it must fill his conduct and conversation with life.
